You know you're in love when ...

The chemistry of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol reaches a whole new dimension in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH) a Yash Johar production, very competently directed by his son Karan Johar. A romantic film made in the Yash Chopra style (aesthetically) and yet with its own identity as far as content and treatment is concerned.

This film spans a whole decade in time and its distinction is its tender treatment of relationships. In many ways, there is a woman's touch to the movie. Throughout the picture, one can actually sense the transformation of the two lead characters - how they discover their intense love for each other.

Karan Johar has clarified in an interview that the story of KKHH is not a love triangle at all; it is basically the love story of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. All the other characters (Rani, Sana Saeed, Farida Jalal) are only factors which take that love story forward.

A lot of credit for the movie has to go to Shah Rukh and Kajol who have perhaps put in the best performances of their careers in this picture. Some scenes are simply unforgettable - for instance, the good-bye scene in the railway station in the end of the first half. It was such a moving mixture of tears, laughter, confused feelings of love, hope and despair and is excellently performed by SRK and Kajol.

There are other lighter moments which show them at their spontaneous best - the basketball matches (both in college and as adults).

Or SRK candidly calling Kajol sexy after she does the hilarious take off on Rangeela during the dumb charades game. He then promptly feels self-conscious about it while Kajol accepts the compliment with a mixture of pleasure and embarrassment.

Then there's the more blatantly amorous scene of them rain-drenched in the gazebo where they get quite carried away, with Kajol unhappily breaking away when she remembers that she's engaged to Salman Khan - a scene done with such grace and sensuality that, far from feeling embarrassed, the audience is left asking for more.

The movie closes with their silence and all their pent-up emotions revealed through the tears in their eyes. Shah Rukh Khan tenderly expresses his love for Kajol by miming.

Perhaps the most outstanding scene of the movie is of SRK and Kajol meeting for the first time after almost a decade. There isn't a dry eye in the audience as they see the gamut of emotions that emerge when SRK's gaze meets Kajol's - first the shock, then the pleasure, the flood of memories, the awkwardness, the desire to touch, and the tongue-tied love that surfaces! And Karan has said in an interview that this particular scene was taken by "just switching on the camera and letting the two do their own thing" - implying that it was a totally spontaneously performance. He even says "I've just heard of people crying on the sets while watching a great performance; while shooting this scene, I actually saw it happening!" It's really the stuff that great movie moments are made of! That is why the movie makes you cry, because you feel for the couple - that so many years were wasted while they were separated. And in the end, you feel a tremendous sense of relief, that they were united after all. Its very rare that an on-screen pair can evoke such feelings from an audience.

They both are excellent actors on their own, of course, but they are simply incomparable when paired. This may be because they are performers of the same school of acting - spontaneity, involvement and improvisation. If there ever was a pair with awesome physical, mental and emotional CHEMISTRY it is Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Like SRK once remarked on his chemistry with Kajol by saying, "Our eyes are made for each other". They don't need to say anything, their facial expressions are articulate enough. Their spontaneity, their energy and passion clicks like nothing else!

History repeated itself when once again, the duo were rewarded with the Filmfare trophies for Best Actor and Actress for KKHH for the year 1998. This amazing film once again had the top four awards (Best Actor, Actress, Film and Director) awards and 4 others (8 in all) in its kitty - another record-breaker! Further, KKHH also won all the top awards (both popular and technical) in the Lux Zee Cine awards!
