Whether its their champagne eyes or their radiant warmth and energy, there is something ... some quality which clicks so well that one can't help acknowledge that these two are made for each other.

Baazigar
The Kajol-Shah Rukh Khan saga began with the landmark film Baazigar in 1993. This was not just a picture, it was a cinematic phenomenon - different from anything the Indian screen had ever seen before. The story was unconventional with the protagonist being a cold-blooded killer. It also had a new star pairing: a young one-film old actress Kajol; and Shah Rukh Khan, who had not yet become a superstar. The publicity was low-key, the film's story was kept under wraps. When it hit the theatres, there was a reaction like never before! Never before had such a ruthless character become so popular with the audiences.
The story revolved around the revenge of the protagonist and how many risks and chances he takes to achieve his aim. The suspense is built up at a steady pace: the picture starts with Shah Rukh Khan wooing both Shilpa Shetty and her younger sister Kajol. Just as the frivolity of the beginning of the film begins to gnaw at the audience's patience, SRK throws the unsuspecting Shilpa Shetty (in a small role) off a terrace of a multi- storeyed building!

Why he does this is learnt through a series of flashbacks revealing a story of intrigue where Kajol's father is the villain. Meanwhile SRK, in an attempt to get closer access to the family, courts Kajol who falls head-over-heels in love with SRK. She suspects foul play in sister's death, which could prove dangerous for the 'Baazigar'. Only now he has a problem - he discovers that he's fallen in love with her too! The rest of the story is how he deals with a tightening-noose situation and handles his relationship with his lover who's father he is trying to destroy.

One of the highlights of the movie was their famous dance number Yeh kaali kaali ankhen was performed with such energy and fervour that it is remembered as one of the most successful dance numbers of all time!  Although both claim not to be very comfortable with dancing, they were both so charged and easy with each other that it was hard to believe that it was only their first film together.

Then 1995 saw them both together again in Karan Arjun - a film which both of them admit "not to understand as artists". However their Jaati hu main number, very suggestively picturised on the two of them at a stud farm rose to the top of the charts and contributed in a major way to the phenomenal success of the film. The urgency in their love as they cavorted around lent a sensual aura to an otherwise mundane song. The sheer screen presence and spontaneity of this couple made the song popular, which might have, on any other pair, seemed crass and awkward.

Karan Arjun was one of the top grossers of all time and would have been the top grosser of 1995 but for one picture, which came along and shattered all box-office records.

The movie was Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (popularly called DDLJ)- a typical Yash Chopra romantic film directed by his debutante son Aditya Chopra.
